In 2007, Birch, Horton, Bittner and Cherot proudly celebrated its 36th anniversary of providing legal services to Alaskans.
Founded in 1971 by Ronald Birch, BHBC began as a local general practice firm in Anchorage. The firm has grown, expanded and matured along with the State of Alaska, and today, BHBC is one of Alaska's most prestigious law firms, with many specialized practice areas.
BHBC soon realized its Alaskan clients could benefit from a presence in the nation’s capital, as many issues involved the federal government. In 1975, the firm opened its Washington, D.C. office, close to the Capitol and near to major executive branch agencies. The D.C. office quickly accumulated an impressive track record on behalf of Alaskan interests and built a reputation as one of Washington’s preeminent government relations firms. The D.C. office now draws clients nationwide who wish to tap BHBC’s extensive experience interfacing with the Alaska Congressional delegation and other Congressional leaders.
Many important events in Alaska’s history have been influenced by BHBC attorneys. Two of our senior members (then in key government positions) helped draft and implement the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) and the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). During the 1970s, BHBC represented the parties constructing the TransAlaska pipeline. Our litigators represented Alaska Native Corporations in cases heard by the U.S. Supreme Court that to this day affect federal procurement rules. And our firm represented Alaska banking institutions during both boom and bust periods.
Today, BHBC is a multi-faceted law firm serving clients large and small, from multi-national corporations to Native-owned small business start-ups, and from the State of Alaska to private individuals.
A professional corporation headquartered in Anchorage, our firm is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell. Seven attorneys have been selected as leading U.S. business lawyers by the independent legal research firm Chambers & Partners USA. Four attorneys are ranked in the top tier of all lawyers in Alaska in their respective fields of expertise.
Alaska is a special place. Our attorneys understand and appreciate its unique geographical, cultural and political landscape. This Alaskan sensibility infuses all of our practice areas as we bring added value to our clients in everything we do.
